UFO Cookbook

I had a strange experience with UFO-related synchronicity yesterday that I'm still scratching my head over...

My wife and I were doing some shopping and antiquing in Evanston, IL, where the subject of my book, Dr. J. Allen Hynek, lived and worked for years. We spend a lot of time in this area, and I've gotten used to meeting random people who have some random connection to Hynek or finding myself at some business or building with some Hynek connection; it happens with surprising regularity and it makes me feel very fortunate to be so close to the world I'm writing about.

Recently I have done some research on a historical moment in astronomy that involved Hynek and that led to yesterday's odd happenings. In the summer of 1933, Hynek was working on his Ph.D. at the beautiful Yerkes Observatory on the shores of Lake Geneva, WI, and at that time the "Century of Progress" World's Fair was gearing up to open 100 miles away in Chicago. The retiring head of Yerkes, Dr. Edwin Frost, had convinced the Fair's organizers to light up the Fair on its opening night with a little help from the Observatory.

On May 27, the opening night of the Fair, the staff at Yerkes -- Hynek among them -- aimed their 40" refracting telescope at Arcturus, the brightest star in the northern celestial hemisphere, and focused its brilliant light on a photoelectric cell. The cell converted the light of Arcturus to an electrical impulse that was sent to the Chicago lakeshore over telegraph lines, and at precisely 8:15 p.m. that impulse activated the switch that lit up the World's Fair, to the roaring approval of over 30,000 fairgoers. It was an especially magical moment to Chicagoans in that the "Star Beam" that reached the telescope that night was believed to have been created by Arcturus 40 years earlier, in 1893, when the last Chicago World's Fair had been held (it was discovered later that Arcturus is only 36 light years from earth, but whatever).

So yesterday on a whim we decide to explore the shops on a little side street in Evanston, and we find two absolute gems, the Chicago Rare Book Center and Eureka! Antiques and Collectibles, side by side! We go into Eureka! first and the first thing I see is a framed jigsaw puzzle depicting the 1933 Century of Progress World's Fair, and I start to feel a strange tingling... My wife, meanwhile, is in heaven because the place is filled with vintage cookbooks, so after I look around a bit more I leave her to her explorations and follow my tingling next door to the book store. Naturally, there's a section on Chicago history, and naturally, some of the books are about Chicago's World's Fairs (even after all these years, the two Fairs are still huge cultural icons in the city), so I start up a conversation with one of the owners, Tom, and he helps me find some material about the 1933 Fair. As we're talking, he asks if I know a woman named Abigail Foerstner, which I don't, then he explains to me that she wrote a biography of famed astrophysicist James Van Allen, discoverer of the Van Allen radiation belt...


"I would imagine Van Allen and Hynek must have crossed paths at some time or another," says Tom. "Yes they did," I reply. In fact, their paths crossed at least twice: once, during WWII, while developing the proximity fuze for the U.S. Army, and then a few years after the war, on project that launched astronomical instruments into space inside captured Nazi V-2 rockets. They're little-known, but fascinating chapters in Hynek's career, and I am glad to be able to learn more about them. So, Tom gives me Ms. Foerstner's contact info and promises to get in touch if he comes across any Hynek-related material. Cool.

Then my wife and I regroup, and I can tell she's excited about something. She shows me a tiny little vintage cookbook she just found at Eureka! And I mean tiny: it's no bigger than 5"x5", no thicker than 1/8". It has a beautiful full-color illustration on the cover that I immediately recognize as being from the 1933 World's Fair, but the title of the book is "Durkee Famous Food Recipes." Huh?

Turns out, the cookbook was a free souvenir created for "the busy American housewife" and given out to anyone who visited the Durkee Foods exhibit at the World's Fair. To keep with the theme, the recipes all have goofy World's Fair-related names, so you'll find items such as "Planetarium Tapioca Royal," "World's Fair Ham Loaf," and "Canapes a la Midway." All pretty funny, but then my wife shows me the jaw-dropper:

You Don't Tug on Superman's Cape

I hate to quote a Jim Croce song, but it fits today's post.

What has brought me to such a state that I'm quoting corny 1970's story songs?

Well... I've written it before and I'll write it again: One of the most enjoyable aspects of writing the biography of famed UFO researcher Dr. J. Allen Hynek is that I keep finding more evidence that contradicts the popularly-held belief that he was a timid, weak coward. He was, in fact, a cape-tugger, a wind-spitter-intoer, a mask-puller, and a Jim-messer-around-wither.

One striking example came to light shortly after Hynek's passing in 1986, at the memorial services held for him at the University of Chicago. Now, Hynek is not often associated with the University of Chicago, since he spent most of his career at Ohio State, Harvard and Northwestern, but U of C was Hynek's alma mater. He earned his bachelor's degree there, and then earned his Ph.D. at U of C's Yerkes Observatory on the shoes of Lake Geneva in Williams Bay, Wisconsin.

His thesis work at Yerkes "was concerned with the spectra of certain bright F-type stars," explained Dr. William W. Morgan in his eulogy to Hynek. "He revealed a delicate sensitivity to the varied appearances of the spectra of differing F stars," Morgan went on, "and a sense of morphological form as the thesis developed. He received the Ph.D. degree in 1935; the thesis was published in the November 1935 Astrophysical Journal."

That's all well and good, but then Morgan went on to describe a certain awkward incident involving Hynek's thesis work that reveals a striking aspect of Hynek's nature:

"Perhaps the most important result in the thesis," Morgan said, "was Hynek’s demonstration that the Mount Wilson classifications of many bright F0 stars from the Henry Draper Catalogue were seriously in error. These are HD F0 stars showing the broadest spectral lines, due to rapid stellar rotation. Such stellar spectra were classified too early, as A stars, by the Mount Wilson observers."

Morgan is referring to the Mt. Wilson Observatory in southern California, which, at the time Hynek was writing Doctoral thesis in the early 1930s, was pretty much the planet Krypton of astronomy. It was another world, and the scientists who lived there were astronomy Supermen, with X-ray vision, the ability to fly and outrun locomotives, and, yes, capes.

You didn't fuck with the men of Mt. Wilson, especially if you were a lowly graduate student working in complete and deserved obscurity in a backwater like Williams Bay, Wisconsin. But that's just what Hynek did. He found an error in the work of the Mt. Wilson astronomers and then he proved they were wrong in his thesis.

What's more, he crowed about it... There is a very entertaining and illuminating correspondence in the Yerkes Observatory archives between Hynek and his boss at Yerkes, Dr. Otto Struve, in which the political ramifications of Hynek's discovery are embarrassingly apparent... Struve, who also published the Astrophysical Journal, was distressed that Hynek's paper would cause a row when it appeared in the Journal...

In a letter to Hynek, Struve gently, subtly, timidly suggested that Hynek might want to think about revising the passages in his paper in which he describes the Mt. Wilson astronomers as dummies and amateurs. Struve delicately requests that Hynek could... perhaps... choose gentler words to describe these people who are, after all, soon to be his professional colleagues...

Rubbed Out

Boy, have I got it good, biography-writing wise.

I recently met a very talented writer who is working on a biography of a fairly famous cultural figure, and what he had to tell me about his work made me feel very grateful for the relative sanity of the UFO world.

Yes, I used the terms 'UFO' and 'sanity' in the same sentence. Savor that.

Now this writer, who I met at a social event, is the real deal. He's getting books and articles published all the time, and the fact that he's a flipping genius smacks you in the face the minute he starts talking about his latest project. And yet, he took a real interest in my project; he knew who Dr. J. Allen Hynek was and got excited when I mentioned his name.

"I was just talking to a friend," he said with an excited smile, "who was telling about a character in a book who was loosely based on Dr. Hynek!" He thought I must know the book and the character, but I had to confess I didn't. I thought his friend might have been thinking of Francois Truffaut's take on Jacques Vallee in the movie "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," but he assured me that wasn't it. It was a book, and the character was based on Hynek, he was quite sure.

So that was cool, and I'm looking forward to getting the title of the book and the name of the character when he's able to get in touch with his friend.

Then we talked about some of the difficulties we've encountered with our research, and here's where I realized how good I've got it. Sure, I run across the occasional Crabby Appleton who doesn't want to talk to me... and I deal with the occasional nutjob who attacks my work and sabotages interviews... and I have some material for the book that is likely to piss off some people if I decide to include it. But that's nothing compared to what my new friend had to tell me.

"I have some material that, if it is published in my book, will make some people very angry with me," he said. "But I also have some material that, if it is published, could get me killed."

Then he clarified. He didn't mean to say "could get me killed." He meant to say "will get me killed."

Turns out there's some shady activity in the story he's writing, and it's been kept secret by some powerful people. He didn't go into much detail -- I wanted him to, but he wisely said very little more to me about it.

That never happens to me. I suppose it could -- I did have that creepy stalker incident recently -- but it hasn't yet. And I hope it doesn't. I mean, I'd love a visit from the Men In Black, but not from a mafia hit man.

Like I said, right now I'm grateful for the relative sanity of UFO world.

Son of Hypno-UFO -- Part II

Here is is at last, more of the Charles Hickson hypnotism session! The first two segments are here and here. (Be sure to read the comments; people were scolding me over posting this!)

As I promised last time, this new segment includes Charlie telling Dr. James Harder about what it felt like to be floated aboard a UFO and into an examination room...

Harder:  I would like to see you now see if you can tell us about the sensation of floating, you said before. Now do you feel that you're floating, or do you feel that you're sitting or standing on something? 

Hickson: I-- I just ain't got no feelings.

Harder: You don't have any feelings. But that does -- does that mean that you could be sitting on something or lying on something without being able to feel it? Is that a possibility, or do you think that you're -- do you have -- tell me about the feeling that you have. (pause) You say you have no feelings, but do you feel -- do you feel any of your internal organs, do you feel your stomach being fluttery or anything of that sort? How does your stomach feel?

Hickson: I can't -- I-I can't feel nothing.

Harder: Do you feel yourself touching anything?

Hickson: No... I'm trying to move my toes. (pause) I can't do it!

Harder: Well that's all right, that'll be okay. Your feeling will come back. (pause) Can you tell us what happens next, after this? Is there something that happened to you, something that you heard, that you're able to feel or hear, or observe right now that you have not seen before? Is there something that's new that you're remembering? You can concentrate on that, and see if there's anything new that you can tell us that's happening to you.

(long pause)

Hickson: It's real bright in here.

Harder: Very bright... How does it remind you? Does it remind you of something that you've seen? Is there anything that's bright that you've seen before that you can compare it to?

(long pause)

Hickson: I don't think so.

Harder: You've been around arc welding on ships. How would you compare it with that?

Hickson: It's not a... It's not a light like that. 

Harder: Uh-huh. In what way isn't it like that? Is it not...

Hickson: It -- It's just glowing. Glowing.

Harder: Just glowing.


Hickson: There's something... in front of me.

Harder: Can you describe it? Does it seem to have  anything that looks like glass or is shiny or reflective? Or is it just dull-colored or gray-colored?

Hickson: There's something.... The light's bright. I can't see through.

And it pretty much peters out right there... Is there a law of diminishing returns where hypnotism is concerned? Because by this time in the session, Hickson is really running out of things to say. And Harder seems to think that if he just wears Hickson down enough, the guy will finally come up with something.

It's almost comical; you just get the feeling that poor Charlie Hickson has no idea what Harder is trying to get at, and he's just not able to give Harder any kind of satisfactory response... and in the end, we really don't learn anything at all about what it felt like to be floated aboard the UFO. Which sucks, because I really wanted to know!!

Damn you, Harder! Why can't you just get to the point??

The Man Who Invented Flying Saucers

Over the weekend I've been reading "The Man From Mars" (2012, Tarcher/Penguin), and I think it's a must-read for anyone interested in the history of UFOlogy in America. "Mars" is a raucously entertaining book about a man who could fairly be described as the world's first UFO huckster, pulp publisher Ray A. Palmer (known to his many fans and detractors as simply "Rap").

The book, by Fred Nadis, recounts Rap's early involvement in science fiction publishing in the 1930s, first as a fanzine pioneer and then editor of the popular and influential Amazing Stories magazine. Not content to merely publish entertaining science fiction, Rap was a myth-maker, endlessly messing with his readers' minds by blurring the lines between reality and fantasy, fiction and non-fiction.

When private pilot Kenneth Arnold became the first modern flying saucer witness in the summer of 1947 and the entire country went saucer crazy, Rap founded Fate magazine and perched himself atop the crest of the flying saucer tsunami. Nadis writes that Fate was "designed for an audience with a taste for the paranormal and unexplained," then continues with this wonderful passage:
"With its first issue in 1948, Fate also became a centerpiece for the newly forming flying saucer subculture. Unafraid of the tyranny of what he termed the 'raised eyebrow,' Palmer became the ideal figurehead for the new community of 'saucer people.'" 
That's where the story gets really interesting, to me...

Not only did Rap convince Kenneth Arnold, who was quickly becoming a national laughingstock, to share his story in the first issue of Fate (see picture on right), he transformed Arnold from the world's first flying saucer witness into the world's first flying saucer investigator. In a wild story worthy of the pulp fiction he had been publishing for years, Rap sent Arnold out to investigate the Maury Island, Washington, sighting, and the assignment soon turned hairy... Before Arnold gave up and headed home in frustration, the bizarre case had come to involve the FBI, the Men In Black, a disappearing house, flying saucer fragments... and, possibly, sabotage and murder.

The incident inspired Rap and Arnold to co-author a book about the case, "The Coming of the Saucers." Judging from the extensive excerpts in Nadis' book, I expect "Saucers" will be a good read, but as Nadis points out elsewhere in his book, Rap's recurring editorial advice for writers who had trouble maintaining a suspenseful pace in their pulp stories was: "When the action slows, throw another body through the skylight." Arnold's and Rap's account of the Maury Island investigation, alas, smacks of the writers desperately throwing body after body through the skylight...

Then there's this:

One of Nadis' sources is a 1983 magazine article written about Rap by famed UFO writer John Keel. The article, entitled "The Man Who Invented Flying Saucers," appeared in the Winter issue of Fortean Times magazine, and gives us a fascinating, sad, yet hilarious description of the first ever UFO convention... attended by Keel himself:
"In the fall of 1948, the first flying saucer convention was held at the Labor Temple on 14th Street in New York City. Attended by about thirty people, most of whom were clutching the latest issue of Fate, the meeting quickly dissolved into a shouting match. Although the flying saucer mystery was only a year old, the side issues of government conspiracy and censorship already dominated the situation because of their strong emotional appeal"
Think about that. In the fall of 1948, just a little over a year since Arnold had sighted his flying saucers, "government conspiracy and censorship" were already emerging as the predominant themes among the "saucer people."

Read the book. For good or bad, it's because of Ray Palmer and his exuberant myth-making that we're now stuck with Disclosure, the Roswell Incident, Area 51 and Dulce Base. Thanks Rap.

Coffee and UFOs

Sometimes the best way to enjoy a beautiful Saturday morning while the house is still quiet is to settle in with a cup of coffee and catch up on UFO news.

That means looking in on some of my favorite UFO blogs to see what my colleagues are writing about, which is always worthwhile. There are a lot of interesting, intelligent, entertaining people in the wide, wide world of UFOlogy, and one of the biggest reasons I appreciate their work so much is that they tackle subjects that I don't want to (or simply can't because I don't know nearly as much as they do).

Today we have quite a smorgasbord...

In The Big Study, Professor Michael Swords offers up a little-known "coincidence" involving the famous 1977 "WOW signal," received by the "Big Ear" radio telescope at Ohio State University. Is it possible that an amateur electronics whiz in Indiana picked up the same signal the same night? It's a tantalizing story, and the Professor leaves us wanting to know more...

What's the most spectacular train wreck in UFOlogy? So many choices...
In The Other Side of Truth, Paul Kimball reports on the recent Canadian UFO Survey, which documents 25 years of UFO sightings north of the border. I have only taken a brief look so far this morning, but it looks as though the work done by Chris Rutkowski and UFOlogy Research of Manitoba is a model for UFO researchers everywhere. Kinda cool that their methodology is based on Allen Hendry's awesome 1979 guide, "The UFO Handbook" (also kinda cool, in a completely irrelevant way: One of Dr. J. Allen Hynek's personal UFO sightings took place at his family's cabin in Canada).

Over at Jack Brewer's The UFO Trail, meanwhile, Jack weighs in on the "Carpenter Affair," in which a hypnotist allegedly engages in some seriously sketchy behavior and still gets invited to speak at MUFON meetings (Hate to say it, but we all know this kind of thing happens all the time; seems there's always a place at the head table for even the most ethically compromised "UFOlogists"). UPDATE: Jack just tweeted me to say this is not "alleged" but "confirmed" here: http://ufotrail.blogspot.com/2013/10/the-carpenter-affair-for-record.html )

For sheer volume, it's hard to beat The UFO Iconoclast(s), which has been serving up a succession of meaty posts over the past few days. First, the always interesting RRRGroup watches bad UFO TV so we don't have to: ancient astronaut guy Giorgio Tsoukalos hosted a show on cable TV last night about "The Roswell Rock," and RRRGroup wasted not a moment in skewering this silly "find." I have joked before about how, in the course of things, the world will undoubtedly be presented with the Roswell 8-Track Tape, the Roswell Post-It Notes, and the Roswell Dry-Erase Board, each of which will prove that a UFO crashed in Roswell, NM in 1947... before being thoroughly debunked. "The Roswell Rock" shows that there may be more truth to my joke than I suspected.

As if to emphasize the point, just a day earlier RRRGroup tore into the "Roswell Slides" drama and found it to be "Sidetracked or Derailed." According to the post, the owner of the slides in question has spurned the "Roswell Dream Team," and is apparently in talks with cable TV producers to present the blockbuster slides in a blockbuster TV special. You can't blame the guy for wanting to cash in, I suppose, and you really can't blame him for not wanting to share the spoils with the RDT. It's a good read, and you have to love a writer who can use "in toto" and "summum bonum" in the same sentence.

So that's my Saturday morning. Now... off to the beach!

Getting Rich Off UFOs

I don't know why I didn't think of this sooner. It's been in front of my nose for the longest time, and I never gave it a thought until today.

It turns out that there is one very easy way to get rich being a UFOlogist. All you have to do is collect the prize money!

What prize money, you might ask? Oh, it's out there, just begging to be claimed. One award is for a cool $100,000, and the other is for One Million freaking dollars! All you have to do is prove that UFOs and paranormal phenomena are real, and you walk home $1,100,000 richer.

Who is putting such whopping amounts of money at such perilous risk, you might also ask? What kind of damn fool would lay so much in the line?

Well, the first award, the one for $100,000, is being offered by James Fox and Tracy Torme, the filmmakers behind a long-planned movie called "701," which refers to the 701 UFO cases from the Air Force's Project Blue Book files that remain unexplained. Does anyone else see the problem here? If the filmmakers plan to make a two-hour movie they will only have 10.27 seconds to devote to each case, which is even less time than Blue Book gave them.

Anyway, the website for the film has a lot of sinister clouds and voiceover clips and stuff, and boldly claims that 701 is "THE NUMBER THE GOVERNMENT DOES NOT WANT YOU TO KNOW." Which is a bit like saying "Tuesday is the day the government does not want you to know." Why would the government not want you to "know" a number, and how the hell are they going to stop you from "knowing" a number? It makes absolutely no sense.

But the $100,000 is serious. "...we're offering a $100,000 reward for the best proof that some UFOs are alien spacecraft," Fox told the Huffington Post way, way back in February, 2013. "This material can be in the form of a photograph, video or film footage or debris from an alleged crash site. But it must be able to withstand scientific scrutiny by our chosen panel."
You can expect to see this truck pulling up my driveway any day now... It will be a lot lighter when it leaves.

You know what I say to that? QED. While Fox makes it sound as though his "scientific panel" will be hard to fool, anybody who pays even the slightest bit of attention to the world of UFOlogy knows damn well that people like Fox and his panelists are Jonesing so hard for real proof that they will be unbelievably easy to dupe. I am, even as I write this, carefully preparing a smorgasbord of unusual crystals, absolutely not-of-this-earth metallic fragments, hard-to-explain photographs and inexplicable alien encounters so convincing they would fool even the Roswell Dream Team.

In other words, consider the $100,000 mine. I am already drawing up the bank deposit slip.

The $1 million could be a little harder to get my hands on, but only just. The "One Million Dollar Paranormal Challenge" is being offered by the James Randi Educational Foundation, a group dedicated to debunking "the paranormal, pseudoscientific and the supernatural." In other words, unlike Fox and Torme, who apparently really do want someone to prove the reality of UFOs and so have offered only a measly hundred grand, Randi's foundation is pretty sure no one will be able to meet their challenge. So they think that $1 mill is pretty safe.

I call bullshit on that.
"At JREF, we offer a one-million-dollar prize to anyone who can show, under proper observing conditions, evidence of any paranormal, supernatural, or occult power or event. The JREF does not involve itself in the testing procedure, other than helping to design the protocol and approving the conditions under which a test will take place. All tests are designed with the participation and approval of the applicant. In most cases, the applicant will be asked to perform a relatively simple preliminary test of the claim, which if successful, will be followed by the formal test. Preliminary tests are usually conducted by associates of the JREF at the site where the applicant lives. Upon success in the preliminary testing process, the 'applicant' becomes a 'claimant.'"
This seems like a no-brainer. There is no "scientific panel." The "formal test" takes place in my own home, for Christ's sake. How could I not become the "claimant?" In fact, there's no reason why I can't present the very same evidence for this award that I presented to the "701" competition. Who's to say a fragment of unearthly metal from a UFO can't have psychic properties? And why couldn't the wreckage of a crashed flying saucer be haunted by the ghosts of its alien crew?

Imagine being able to prove the existence of alien ghosts! Does the fun factor not just rocket off the charts when you combine those two words?

So yeah, my future is looking pretty rosey... There is one thing that's nagging at me, though. I've just been looking through the August issue of the MUFON Journal, and it's chock full of photos from the recent MUFON 2014 Symposium held in New Jersey. James Fox, of "701" fame, is in a whole lot of the photos, and he's in these photos with some people who have made pretty bold claims in the past about evidence of the reality of UFOs... Come to think of it, some of the folks listed in the production credits on the movie's website have also made some bold claims about UFO proof. Why haven't any of these people claimed Fox's $100,000?

The End of UFOs?

I can't say I really liked Mark Jacobson's UFO article that appeared over the weekend in New York Magazine's "Daily Intelligencer."

While it's great anytime the phenomenon gets coverage in such a prominent publication, it's also fraught with complications... The article claims to be about UFOlogy, and starts out promisingly enough, but I realized in pretty short order that it was simply a report on the MUFON 2014 Symposium, which happened to be held in New Jersey. In other words, the UFO convention was close enough to New York that there would be no travel expenses involved, so why not send a reporter around for an afternoon to see what he could come up with?

So for Jacobson to claim that he was authoritatively summing up the state of modern UFOlogy was quite a stretch...

Not that he didn't make an attempt to do a creditable job. The writer clearly knows a thing or two about the history of UFO phenomenon, and knows enough to question the whole silly "Disclosure" meme that has taken over the field. But it's not hard to see that spending a few hours interviewing random MUFONers might make him think that UFOlogy is a relic of the past. What he didn't seem to get was that UFOlogy is much bigger than MUFON, and there is much more to know about the field than an afternoon in New Jersey will tell you.

Thank God the writer talked with George Knapp. He at least got to see that there's some intelligence in UFOlogy. But he also talked with Steven Bassett, the brainiac behind last year's asinine and embarassing "Citizen Hearing on Disclosure."

And now, in the eyes of the New York Magazine's readers, those are the voices of modern UFOlogy. The only voices.

Interestingly, the reporter pointedly emphasized the ages of everyone involved, to drive home the point that UFOlogy is essentially running on Geritol fumes. (Had Stanton Friedman been in attendance, the reporter would undoubtedly have included him in the discussion, but I don't see how that would have improved things -- to the reporter, it just would have meant more old material from another old guy).

Someday, maybe, there will be a write-up about UFOs and UFOlogists in a mainstream publication that portrays us as intelligent, thoughtful people who aren't all pushing 90 and who don't necessarily gather at UFO conventions, but are driven by a genuine need to understand a phenomenon that science has yet to come to terms with.

Someday, maybe.

Hynek: UFO Rebel

Just a short post here today before I head out for a few days' vacation.

Last week I was at the University of Chicago archives researching the early work of Dr. J. Allen Hynek. And when I say early, I mean back in the mid-1930s when he was getting his Ph.D. and just beginning his career as a professional astronomer.

It's been one of the great joys of working on this book that I have found so many surprises in Hynek's past that completely obliterate the popular perception among his contemporaries and among modern-day UFOlogists that he was a weak, timid, lily-livered coward who sold out the UFO community and enabled the U.S. Air Force's UFO "coverup." This view is still pervasive today, as one recent UFO book revealed: the authors laughably titled their chapter about the Doctor, "J. Allen Hynek: Dupe or Accomplice?"

Uh... How 'bout neither?

There's a mountain of documented evidence that Hynek was in fact remarkably brave and outspoken in the astrophysics community even when he was an absolute nobody! He was already quite the rebel when he took up his first professional position at Ohio Wesleyan University in the '30's. You just have to look for the evidence.

For today, one example will suffice. At the U of C archives one can find folder after folder of correspondence between Hynek and his mentor and former boss at the Yerkes Observatory, Dr. Otto Struve. In these letters, Hynek's penmanship is striking: his handwriting leans very dramatically to the left...

I thought this pronounced slanting was pretty interesting, and I wanted to find out what it might mean. I did a little unscientific online research into handwriting analysis and discovered a pretty consistent theme running across several websites...

A person whose handwriting leans heavily to the left is "quiet, reclusive, and usually thinks before acting," said one website. That is very true of Hynek, but it's not the whole story. Another site stated that if your handwriting slants left, "You tend to keep to yourself and generally like to work behind the scenes. If you are right-handed and your handwriting slants to the left, you may be expressing rebellion." 

The key question, then, is this: Was Hynek a right-handed rebel? I'll let the photographic evidence speak for itself...

Son of Hypno-UFO

A while back I wrote about the cassette tape I recently digitized entitled "Charlie Hickson Hypnosis Session, Sprinkle & Harder." In the post, I inserted a transcription of a hypnosis session conducted by Dr. James Harder and Dr. Leo Sprinkle, in which they asked UFO abductee Charles Hickson to relive his experience in Mississippi shipyard in October, 1973, when he and his buddy Calvin Parker were floated aboard a strange glowing craft and inspected.

In the first installment, Dr. Sprinkle had Charlie talk abut his experience inside the craft, and now today I'm posting the exchange between Harder and Hickson in which Charlie described the strange robot-like beings that floated him and Calvin aboard the craft...

And for all you Harder haters out there, I admit he does have an odd, tedious approach, and seems at time to be methodically digging for something rather than letting Hickson just tell his story... But I don't know much about hypnosis, so I don't know whether that's an acceptable approach or a no-no. Remember, this interview took place just minutes after Charlie was in complete terror recounting his examination, so it's possible that he was naturally reticent to go back there and that Harder had to work a little, er... harder, to get Charlie to go back one more time...

Harder: ...Can you stand back and kind of just look at the scene? It's not necessary for you to be frightened. Nothing really happened to you physically. You got out of it okay; you're really all right. But I want you to take a very close look at the robot, or whatever it was. Take a very concentrated look, and see if you can tell us what you see around the head area. As you see it, can you tell us what the head looks like? Can you see anything that is sticking out anyplace, in front? Without regard to what you might have remembered before; without regard to any of the pictures you drew. You're in a better position now than you've ever been to really look at what you saw. Now, what you see now, is going to be what was really there. Now is your chance to really be sure to tell us what you saw.

Hickson: I can't see it on-- I can't see nothing. Looks like their arms.

Harder: Uh huh. How long did the arms seem to be relative to the body as compared to a human's? Were they longer or shorter?

Hickson: They're much, much shorter.

Harder: Shorter. And if you see something where you think the joint might be, where is that relative to where a human's joint might be?

Hickson: I can't see it. It's not...


Harder: I see what you mean. Now let's go back to the time when you most clearly saw the head area. At that point, give me the experience when you saw it most clearly. See if you can describe what was going on, what you saw. Can you see something? Can you notice anything that might remind you of  any features? Now remember that you're looking at it very carefully, right now, without regard to anything you might have noticed before. Just remembering it right now, just as you see it, and you'll be able to get the feeling, get the impression of being there from some distance where it's perfectly safe. And you feel very comfortable about it. Take a very calm, collected look at what you can see there and tell us about it.

(long pause)

Hickson: Mmm-- Sss-- See. I cain't; I cain't see it good. (pause) It's... It's...

Harder: Does the head area look smooth? Or wrinkled? Or rough? Or any of those things?

Hickson: Wrinkled. Wrinkled. It's wrinkled. 

Harder: Does it look as if there is something very; is there something that's a lump, or something that sticks out, or anything that looks like it would interrupt the surface of something that was smooth? Are there any lumps or anything like that that you can see?

Hickson: There's somethin'. It's some... Somethin'... There's somethin' sticking out of the face.

Harder: Could you say about how far it sticks out; is it as long as a person's....? It is a half inch or inch, or more than that?

Hickson: It's about an inch.

Harder: How wide is it? Is it more of a...? How wide is it? It it a half an inch?

Hickson: It's -- it's funny looking.

Harder: It does. Could you tell us a little more? Does it look pushed in, or does it look pointed, or anything like that?

Hickson: It's not smushed in, it's, uh... it looks like (unintelligible; sounds like "Horey Jornes'") face, it's so wider (unintelligible), it's bigger there, it comes out kind of to a point.

Harder: Get a very good picture of it and see if you can say how many half-inches is it. It it one half-inch or is it two half-inches, or is it more than that.

Hickson: I'd say it's an inch long.

Harder: Maybe that much. Now let's look around the side, is there something that you see anywhere that sticks out anywhere else? Are there any lumps, or spots where there's a protuberance of any sort? 

Hickson: It seems like it's... I can't see it good from the side, now.

Harder: Just relax and remember what you're seeing right now.

Hickson: It, uh, I see somethin' stickin' out there.

Harder: Does it look like it's sticking out a half an inch, or an inch, or more than that?

Hickson: It's a little bit longer. It's a little bit longer.

Harder: Longer than what? Longer than an inch?

Hickson: Longer than that thing in front.

Harder: A little longer than that thing in front. Is it wide, or (unintelligible)?

Hickson: Can't tell how wide.

Harder: How wide does it appear, from where you now look at it?

Hickson: It's not very wide.

Harder: Is there anything that you see in the area of the middle, were you might; where a normal eye might be, is there anything like an eye? Is there anything that you could describe to us?

Hickson: It's not close enough to (unintelligible).

Harder: Oh. Can you see what the color of whatever these things are that stick out? Are they the same color as the rest of the object? Is there any change in color anywhere?

Hickson: It's solid. About the same color.

Harder: What color is that?

Hickson: It's a (unintelligible), it's kind of a (unintelligible). It's grey.

Harder: You're feeling much more calm now... That's good, because you needn't be afraid, because it's going to be all right. You'll feel very calm and collected, You'll feel that you're going to be okay. You'll be able to relax and really take this in your stride. You should be very proud of yourself that you can be so brave in the midst of all these things, but you can remain this calm and collected; it's very much to your credit.
See what I mean about Harder? A bit tedious, a bit ponderous, a bit preoccupied with protuberances that are a half-inch long, and, although you can't tell from reading this, he sounds exactly like HAL the computer from "2001"... Creepy. But I bet he was popular at parties: "Hey, Harder: Say 'I'm afraid I can't do that, Dave.'"

My favorite part of this excerpt is when Charlie apparently compares the alien robot's face to the face of someone he knows. On earth. Horey Jornes? "It's not smushed in, it's, uh... it looks like Horey Jornes' face... I wonder if Horey of the not-smushed-in face ever found out that he was used as a model of comparison for the wrinkled, protuberance-ridden face of an alien robot? Would he be proud, or ashamed? Was anything on Horey's face or head a half-inch long? I wonder...

More Grandmas and UFOs -- Part II

Well, that didn't take long. Yesterday I wrote about my latest UFO case -- the one that took place when Grover Cleveland was the President -- and while I anticipated that it would be one quick investigation, I didn't realize just how quick it would be...

Last night, a mere four hours after I emailed the witness' Grandson to line up an interview, he sent me the following:
"I don't know if there is much else I could tell you-My Grandmother-Exxxx Fxxx-married name Hxxxxx- was the witness with her family- the Fxxx farm was near Spring Green Wi.- the family cemetary is right below the House  on the Rock- a famous tourist attraction- so I imagine the farm was right there or within a mile of it. She passed in 1994 at 106 years old so in that time frame circa 1897 would have been about 10 years old- I realize this is an incident that happened well over 100 years ago- her description and the year seemed more than a coincidence however I am not too familiar with possible airships of that decade- the show I saw reminded me of it and I thought one more tiny piece of the puzzle might help- enough pieces and you can see the picture- even with something that happened that long ago- As far as my opinion- if had made a roaring sound or left a contrail she would have mentioned that- so I assume it was silent- I pretty much just wrote it off as a dirigible- My son is a nuclear engineer who has worked with Lockheed Martin and I never thought of asking him-"
So much like Roswell it's almost scary...
So... the Grandma may have seen one of the "airships" that were being spotted in the skies all over the US in 1897. If that's the case, her sighting would be part of The Great Airship Flap of 1897, which is probably most noteworthy for "The Aurora Encounter," an alleged "airship crash" that bears more than a passing similarity to "The Roswell Incident" of 50 years later.

Unlike the Roswell story, the Aurora story has a certain charm (see left). The airship was seen by several early-rising Aurora, TX citizens as it flew over the town at 6 a.m., then lost speed and altitude and collided with Judge Proctor's windmill at the dizzying velocity of about 10 miles an hour. So the airship had clearly dropped to sub-light speed. Sadly, the airship exploded upon impact, leaving behind only a mess of scattered wreckage and the remains of a potentially unearthly pilot... The windmill and water tank were, of course, destroyed, but worst of all, the explosion took out Judge Proctor's flower garden.

It is my considered opinion that we will never know whether there was any connection between my case and the Flap of 1897. I am a mere Certified UFO Field Investigator, and this case clearly calls for the talents and training of a Certified Airship Field Investigator.

Hell, even the Grandson who filed the report doesn't seem to really care one way or the other... This is how he finished off his email to me:
I don't think I can add any more, but if you were to call and your number came up unavailiable (sic) or out of state I wouldn't answer it- but it would go to an answering machine-
Ok, then! Case Closed.
